Monday, May 11

8 a.m. – Breakfast

9-11:30 a.m. – Into the Woods, Over the Edge, and Back Home Again: Mythmaking for Art and Life, with Caryn: By exploring the roots and branches of the stories that tell us what to be, how to live, and who to love, we can discover what in these stories needs to be revised, thrown out entirely, or recovered. We’ll write about the guiding stories our culture, community, pals, and family reinforce as well as the stories we tell ourselves, all in the name of finding more freedom, joy, and meaning.

11:30 a.m. – Replenishing Movement/Dance

12 – Lunch

1-2 p.m. – Roots & Wings of the Creative Life: You Out in the World, with Kelley and Caryn: Writers, musicians, artists and others often find they must put themselves out there, sharing their voice and vision. We’ll talk about ways in which we’ve learned to share our work and what’s behind that work while remaining true to who we are and our callings. Along the say, we’ll talk about soulful and authentic marketing and follow-up, and there will be time for discussion and questions.

Whether you’re already an accomplished songwriter & singer or just getting started, we’ll focus on ways to break through to your next level of both! As Les Brown says, “You cannot be wimpy out there on the dream-seeking trail. Dare to break through barriers, to find your own path.”*

9-11:30 a.m. – Writing into the Miraculous, with Caryn: “Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see,” C.S. Lewis writes, and in our own writing, we will flirt with, dwell in, visit, and explore the miracles close at hand in our history, opportunities, callings, and wonderments. Through drawing on the power of writing to deep our observations and expand our peripheral vision, we will write our ways into the truly miraculous within and around our lives.

12 – Lunch

1-2 p.m. – Roots & Wings of the Creative Life: Taking Care of Ourselves, with Kelley and Caryn: Being an artist requires of ourselves immense clarity, discipline, and action when it comes to tender and fierce self-care. We’ll share some of what we’ve learned on the eternal road of self-care, especially how to balance the work and thrill of our art with the work and thrill of our health. There will be space for reflecting on what self-care is for each of us, and sharing strategies, experiences, and lessons.

Staff: We are thrilled to have Sandy Snook and Amy Nixon on board to welcome participants and help them find balance and homecoming throughout the week. A little on each of them: Sandy Snook: Because of Brave Voice, Sandy came to recognize her inner artist. She fell into the practice of journaling and poetry through the encouragement and acceptance of fellow BVD’s. Sandy’s got a passion for Carl Jung, social justice, good conversation, storytelling, remaking old stuff, and learning as she goes. Amy Nixon is an award-winning poet and songwriter who enjoys SoulCollage(R), antiquing, and anything artsy. What keeps her coming back to Brave Voice is the dynamic community that is created among the participants each year.

Afternoon Arts & Activities: Each afternoon features a stretch of open space and time for you to write, sing, create (art supplies will be available), walk, boat, do yoga, nap, or take field trips by foot or car (maps to interesting sites will be available).

Massage: We are honored to have Rachel Creager Ireland, a massage therapist from Prairie Fire Spa in Strong City, on site for some of the afternoons if you wish to sign up for a massage (additional charge paid directly to massage therapist).

Consultations: Kelley or Caryn are available for 20-minute consultations (late afternoon) throughout the week to discuss a song, poem, story, marketing or career or performing idea or opportunity, or anything else related to writing, singing, songwriting, performing, publishing, making a living through the arts, etc.

In-Depth Consultation: Kelley and Caryn offer a limited number of in-depth consultations (50 minutes long) at Brave Voice for an additional fee. See registration for details.
